Force and EMG power spectrum during eccentric and concentric actions

2000

This study was designed to examine the force and activation levels of elbow flexor muscles during preactivated eccentric, concentric and isometric actions.Force, average EMG (aEMG), and the EMG power spectrum were investigated at different constant movement velocities (1 rad x s(-1), 2 rad x s(-1), 3 rad x s(-1), and 4 rad x s(-1)) at different joint angles.Average force at a 110 degree elbow angle was lower and aEMG was higher in concentric actions as compared with eccentric and isometric actions. At a 55 degree elbow angle, there was no difference in aEMG, or it was slightly higher in eccentric actions. MF was higher in the concentric as compared with eccentric actions at the three fastes…

The influence of ageing on the force-velocity-power characteristics of human elbow flexor muscles.

2003

Abstract The purpose of this study was to quantify the effects of ageing on the maximal power ( P max ) of the elbow flexor muscles and to determine the impact of velocity on the loss of power in older people. Sixteen elderly subjects (7 men and 9 women, age range 61–78 years) and 17 young subjects (11 men and 6 women, age range 18–27 years) participated in this study. Maximal elbow flexions were performed against increasing inertia. The maximal force ( F max ), maximal shortening velocity ( V max ), P max , dynamic constants ( a , b and a / F max ), optimal force ( F opt ), optimal velocity ( V opt ) and V opt / V max were determined from Hill's equation. Myoelectrical activity (EMG) of th…

Time of day effects on isometric and isokinetic torque developed during elbow flexion in humans

2001

The aim of this study was, firstly, to confirm or refute the existence of circadian rhythms during several velocities of concentric action of the elbow flexor muscles and, secondly, to compare the characteristics of these circadian rhythms with those obtained during isometric actions. Eight volunteer subjects participated in this study. The circadian rhythms were obtained from six test sessions (TS) carried out at different times of day over 6 days with only one TS a day. During each TS, oral temperature and the torque of the muscle action were measured. The subjects made, on an isokinetic ergometer, two maximal isokinetic concentric elbow flexions at five angular velocities (60, 120, 180, …

Effects of electromyostimulation versus voluntary isometric training on elbow flexor muscle strength.

2007

The purpose of this study was to determine whether 7 weeks of standardized (same number and duration of repetitions, sets and rest strictly identical) electromyostimulation training of the elbow flexor muscles would induce strength gains equivalent to those of voluntary isometric training in isometric, eccentric and concentric contractions. Twenty-five males were randomly assigned to an electromyostimulated group (EMS, n=9), a voluntary isometric group (VOL, n=8), or a control group (CON, n=8). Maximal voluntary isometric, eccentric and concentric strength, electromyographic (EMG) activity of the biceps and triceps brachii muscles, elbow flexor muscle activation (twitch interpolation techni…

Changes in cortico-spinal excitability following uphill versus downhill treadmill exercise

2017

International audience; An acute bout of aerobic exercise induces neuroplasticity in the motor cortex. Moreover, paired associative stimulation (PAS) is known to induce neuroplasticity in M1. However, the possible influence of the type of exercise on the neuroplastic changes remains unknown. The present study investigated the effects of two different modes of muscle contraction produced during locomotor exercise on changes in corticospinal (CS) excitability. Subjects performed two 30-min treadmill exercises at an intensity corresponding to 60% of their maximal heart rate with either a +10% (uphill) or -10% (downhill) slope. These exercises were followed or not by paired associative stimulat…

Changes in motor unit characteristics after eccentric elbow flexor exercise

2010

Morphological evidence suggests that fast-twitch fibers are prone to disruption of their membrane structures by eccentric exercise. However, it is unclear how this is reflected in the discharge rate and action potential propagation of individual motor units, especially at high contraction levels. High-density surface electromyograms were recorded from biceps brachii muscle and decomposed to individual motor unit action potentials at isometric contraction levels between 10% and 75% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) before intermittent maximal elbow flexor eccentric exercise, and two hours (2H), two days (2D) and four days (4D) post-exercise. Maximal voluntary force decreased by 21.3±5.6…

Comparison of elbow flexor isokinetic peak torque and fatigue index between men and women of different training level

2017

The purpose of the study was to compare elbow flexion peak torque (PT) and fatigue index (FI) during isokinetic concentric contractions in men and women with different training levels. Sixty-eight young men and women were divided into four groups: resistance trained men (RTM), non-resistance trained men (NRTM), resistance trained women (RTW) and non- resistance trained women (NRTW). Participants performed two tests on an isokinetic dynamometer, one to evaluate PT and one to evaluate FI. Significant interactions were found for sex and resistance training status with both PT and FI. In general, resistance-trained subjects had higher PT, and women showed lower PT than men. PT values were 67.12…
